Karen Kirkness

ERYT 500, MFA, MSc, Member of the Anatomical Society

My professional and personal life revolve around the continued study of yoga as a method of self-transformation.

On this lifelong journey, I thank my teachers for their support and encouragement. Having first studied Yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore in 2003, I continue taking trips to Mysore to study with his grandson and current KPJAYI Director, Sharath Jois. The Mysore style method is close to my heart and I love being in India as part of a long-term dedication to yoga studentship.

My passion for anatomy encompasses the study of biotensegrity to explore the unifying principles of the body in nature. Through the mentorship of Susan Lowell and the work of Dr. Stephen Levin in biotensegrity, I have come to more fully understand how biological tissues are diagrams of force attenuation. Human anatomy is no different, and in our lifespan, we can experience firsthand the emerging properties of sacred geometry.

I met my first Anatomy teacher, David Keil, in 2003 at what was then called Centered Yoga Teacher Training in Koh Samui, Thailand. I got most of the Intermediate series from David, and have learned much about anatomy in the gross and subtle aspects from his teachings. I have also studied yoga anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff in his amazing online course and in person. My art teacher Robert Rivers has also been a key mentor. He taught me the importance of learning how to look at reality and value the process of seeing. Life drawing is still a meditation for me.

One of the most humbling and enriching experiences of my life was the year I spent in the dissection lab learning about human anatomy at the University of Edinburgh as part of my second masters. Using lo-fi model making, drawing, and 3D printing techniques, I am fascinated with building models of natural geometric patterns in the human body. Through the process of discovering model making, I was lucky enough to meet my mentor in biotensegrity, Susan Lowell. I now attend ISCAA (International Symposium for Clinical and Applied Anatomy) and the Anatomical Society annual meetings. I’m interested in biotensegrity and how its tenets provide a unifying theory of anatomy, especially for yoga practitioners. I am hugely inspired by the work of yoga teacher and author, Joanne Avison.

While at Edinburgh uni, I had the great fortune of meeting Dr Gabrielle Finn, Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at Hull York Medical School. She taught me the basics of using body painting techniques to explore underlying anatomy and I have been expanding on this innovative teaching tool in my yoga anatomy workshops ever since. As a pioneer of body painting as an educational method in medical anatomy education, Dr Finn has contributed extensively in the literature and offers continued support as a mentor as I further develop this approach for non-anatomists such as yogis and medical illustrators. In case you’re into that, post a lot about body painting on my Tumblr.

Travel is now mostly about getting to Boston, Florida, and India with my husband to see family and connect with the yoga community we have cultivated in these places over the years. While at home, I like to make things, hang out with friends and family, and take in the beauty of nature in and around Edinburgh.

Steph Gongora

Steph Gongora (@casa_colbiri) is a certified yoga and aerial teacher currently based in Uvita, Costa Rica. She completed her first formal 200-HR training with Meghan Currie, and continued to pursue an additional 300-HR training with Christina Sell at The San Macros School of Yoga. During her many years in Austin, TX, she regularly attended additional training and continued education with Erinn Lewis of Sukha Yoga, and recently started another online 200-HR study with Alanna Kaivalya. She regularly pursues continued education, especially surrounding Anatomy and Sequencing with Yoga Medicine, and other esteemed schools.

An athlete her whole life, Steph practiced gymnastics until high school, taught pole fitness during college (where she studied Biology and Chemistry), and started a serious daily yoga practice over three years ago. Her teaching style combines precise breakdowns of form and anatomical cuing with a creative flow style, stressing unusual transitions and authentic movements practices.

She has developed a deep love and respect for inversions of all kinds, which is what promoted her to write her first two books in early 2016 – The Beginner’s Guide to Handstand & The Beginner’s Guide to Handstand Pressing. She later added The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Yoga Practice for those looking to deepen their personal asana exploration, and The Beginner’s Guide to Full Body Backbends.

Steph is happily married with five furry children and officially moved down to Costa Rica in the fall of 2016 to build  Flō Eco Retreat Center on the South Pacific coast. When Erin and Steph aren’t travel teaching elsewhere, they host most retreats & trainings at Flō. And when she isn’t doing yoga, she enjoys reading, writing, anything outdoors, writing more books (probably about more Yoga), and spending time with her (not so) little family.

Jen Esquer

Dr. Jen Esquer (@docjenfit) is a self proclaimed MOVER! Active since she was a young child, she first fell in love with gymnastics and was an avid competitor for 9 years. In high school, she left gymnastics to explore track and field, as well as dabbled in dance. While she was lucky enough to avoid major injury during her younger years, she faced minor issues such as ankle sprains, pulled muscles, and fractures, yet never once went to a physical therapist.

Yet, she loved anything having to do with anatomy, physiology, and without knowing for sure whether physical therapy would be her path, she decided to study Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. During this time, she was coaching gymnastics and consistently found her asking, “Why am I taping an ankle? What is truly the issue and how can I help further?”

She was seeking MORE, and was fortunate enough to meet someone teaching a Pilates Bootcamp where she quickly fell in love with the specificity of body movement. Doc Jen started instructing pilates classes, both on the reformer and mat for 6 years throughout undergrad and graduate school. Not only did she appreciate how much pilates reminded me of gymnastics conditioning, but she loved the focus on intricate muscle activation, isometric holds, strict form, and body awareness through core activation.

After graduating with my B.S. in Kinesiology, Jen was accepted into Loma Linda University where she received my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Jen quickly accepted a job at VERT Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation in beautiful Santa Monica, CA. Since working, she has met amazing individuals who have aided in the expansion of her knowledge of the body. Jen has studied Myodetox directly under co-founder, Vinh Pham (@vinnierehab), taken a RockTape course with @themovementmastro herself, and learned from many others professionals in the rehab game.

Jen is now stepping into the next chapter of her career as a private sports therapist, creating programs, hosting workshops, and treating one on one for a more direct and precise experience. Her mission is to heal the world and the best way she can do that is through empowering YOU to learn how to heal yourself! Becoming educated on what is going on with your body is the most powerful piece of knowledge for establishing health and longevity for a pain-free and active lifestyle!

Paula McCarthy

I started Ashtanga Yoga 10 years ago as a something year old couch potato whose back was very sore! With kind and steady encouragement, and plenty of fun from my first teacher, Anto Kearney, I gradually got stronger and more confident. The physical and internal benefits of this practice for me (and my family) began to mount, and I became a firm convert. I had been well and truly bitten by the Ashtanga Yoga bug.

I went on to practice with Paula and David Collins in Ashtanga Yoga Dublin, Blackrock and this is where I did my teacher training. They are great anatomy and asana teachers and the emphasis was very much on the spiritual side of the practice.

I've learned to value the solitude of my own practice as its alchemy continues to open up unexplored areas of experience. At the same time, we are made for interdependence, so its my pleasure to practice with the various mysore communities around the Dublin area.

I like to practice with many of the senior, international Ashtanga teachers when my commitments, as the mom of three teenagers and a needy Labrador, allow!
Manju Jois's approach makes most sense to me. He says yoga is about looking within, that this is where the real teacher is. He says simply relax and enjoy yoga.
I believe Ashtanga Yoga is accessible to everyone, you don't need to be fit or young or flexible........just willing to give it a go!

Looking forward to seeing you in class.

Nikki curran

https://www.facebook.com/iyengaryogamalahide

I have been practicing Iyengar yoga for almost 10 years and have been teaching for over 3 years.

I have completed my Introductory Level 2 certificate and am currently practicing for my Intermediate Junior Level 1 certificate. I believe that yoga is for all of us and find that it's practice brings a healthy body, mind and spirit. Iyengar yoga helps to deepen the understanding of the poses through precision and correct alignment. My love of teaching comes from introducing the wonder that is Iyengar Yoga to everyone so they can experience all it has to offer for themselves.

Susan Farrell

Susan has been teaching in Dublin for 11 years. Her passion for yoga comes, as with many people, from a place of self-healing. She started practicing as a teenager, but at that time in her life didn’t hold her interest. But obviously there was something about yoga that drew her back to it as, at a particularly stressful time of her life she decided she needed yoga in her life again in her 30s.  This proved to be very beneficial and a life changing experience.  So, in 2007, after years of practice, she decided to do her teacher training, not necessarily to become a teacher but to find out more about something she loved.

Susan’s classes are fun, creative and flowing with a clear focus on alignment, anatomy and building strength and flexibility.  They are challenging but accessible for everyone. Susan encourages her students to be patient and positive in their practice and not to get frustrated when they can’t achieve those advanced poses.  Don’t give up….and with regular practice your body will adjust. You have the rest of your life to master a pose!

“for me yoga balances the body and mind and takes you away from your daily life for the duration of your practice, keeping you focused. It helps you reconnect with that peaceful, neutral place within and as I tell my students this place is always there and available to everyone.”

Susan did her original 500hr teacher training with Yoga Therapy Ireland and also trained as a yoga therapist there. She is trained in Hatha, Vinyasa, Pregnancy Yoga and Yin.

Judit Gazdacska

I started practicing yoga later in life...... I was immediately addicted and it has completely changed my life.
I completed my 200 hours teacher training at Absolute Yoga Academy, in Koh Samui in Thailand in 2013.
As my passion deepened for yoga, I wanted to enhance my teaching skills for pre- and postnatal women and children.
It lead me to complete a pregnancy/postnatal yoga teacher training at Yoga Therapy Ireland and a Kids & Family Yoga Teacher Course with
Rainbow Yoga.
I also believe that more and more people need yoga not just for physical exercise but to de-stress from every day routine. This motivated me to go for a 50 hours Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Sarah Lo.
I do CPD hours regularly to deepen my knowledge and be able to teach people better. As part of this, I completed 30 hours Anatomy for Yoga course with Karen Kirkness in 2017.
Recently I discovered the powerful healing effect of sounds on body & mind. It guided me to take a Sound Healing Course, level 1-3 with Nadabrahma Health Academy in 2018.

I love teaching yoga and still practice as often as I can. I quickly learned that it had a very positive way of healing the mind, body and spirit. I am now blessed to be able to bring the same joy to my students that I experience as a teacher.

Gillian Farrell

I began practising Yoga over 10 years ago.  Having acquired a couple of injuries I was advised to take up yoga, so, my initial introduction to Yoga was on a physical level.  I quickly noticed how content I felt after classes and began increasing the number of times I attended.  I was lucky enough to find a wonderful teacher here in Malahide who taught Ashtanga, and I suddenly realised how important the breath was in the practice and how my work on the mat would trickle out into my every day life.

I gradually became more interested in the spiritual side of the practice, the philosophy and in 2015 began my Teacher Training course in Samadhi in Temple Bar with the wonderful Greg Walsh and his amazing team.

I had caught the bug :)  I will be a student of this beautiful practice for the rest of my life.  I am continuously taking workshops with some of my favourite teachers such as Kino McGregor, Amy Ippoliti and more.  I graduated as a Yin Yoga Teacher this year and I am currently practicing the Intermediate Ashtanga Sequence.

My classes are generally strong with an element of playfulness.... as I said the mat and my every day life are pretty much in tune with each other.

His classes are designed to bring the student into a deep sense of connection with their true self and the world around them.To do this David combines the detailed grace of his teacher Meghan Currie with the principles of Embodied Flow as articulated by Tara Judelle in classes which engage the whole body/mind in exploring what it means to live the human experience, from its most physical expression to its most spiritual.

Sibylle Dallman

Sibylle has trained in New York, London, Berlin and Dublin. She teaches workshops for teachers and students nationwide with the intention to develop a more nuanced experience and understanding of the practice.

Lauren Meyler

Yoga teacher and outdoors enthusiast. Lauren practices yoga to cultivate self awareness and compassion toward others.

Brian Malone

Brian is a yoga and breathwork teacher based in Dublin.  Brian undertook his teacher training in Goa, India, studying extensively the lineages of Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Therapeutic yoga. His yoga classes are breath focused and based on alignment and conscious movement, while also encouraging students to intuitively explore the uniqueness of their own bodies and practice, focusing on the sensations not the shapes.

He also teaches breathwork classes, where the focus is on developing a deeper relationship to the breath and connecting to its natural power as a tool for healing, transformation and relaxation. Brian believes that by consciously and compassionately connecting with the body and breath, they can begin to act as an anchor into the present, creating greater clarity and awareness, and allowing access to a simpler flow of life.

All the Best,
Brian

Jill o Neil

I began practicing yoga 10 years ago to help counteract the stiffness in my body that I was experiencing from running and cycling. I soon felt the difference it made, and how calm I felt cycling home from those classes. My practice became more regular and I explored different styles, classes and workshops around Dublin. I started taking a weekly Yin class, which helped to balance my hectic lifestyle.

A move to the Middle East gave me an opportunity to practice and learn with some fantastic international teachers. I studied Meditation and took courses in Pranayama and Yoga Philosophy and completed a certificate in Thai Yoga Massage.

In 2016 I undertook my 500 hour teacher training in Vinyasa Flow and Restorative Yoga in Candidasa, Bali. Following this, I spent a year travelling, practicing and teaching before returning to Dublin.

Back in Dublin, my yoga journey continues. In early 2018 I enrolled in “Heart of Yoga’ one year intensive course at Ashtanga Yoga Dublin, and in June I completed a 50 Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Josh Summers. More training is planned for later in the year.

I teach from the heart and try to make my classes challenging while accessible to all. My classes focus on alignment and connecting breath to movement. I encourage students to take their practice off the mat and in to everyday life.

The more I learn about yoga, the more I realise how little I know. I will forever be a student. The most valuable lessons yoga has taught me are acceptance, and finding the balance between control and letting go.

Namaste,
Jill  (CYT 500)

Jocelyn Brown

Jocelyn began her yoga journey back in her home country of Canada almost 10 years ago, starting her practice while studying in University as a way to destress.  After almost 5 years of practice she took her first 200hr teacher training in 2013.
After completing that first training she went on to complete a 200hr Baptiste Power Flow and 50hr Budokon Yoga certification.

Her classes include influences of power yoga and the modern movement inspiration that comes from Budokon, and a strong emphasis of the connection of body and breath, to create and challenging class suitable for all practitioners.
Get ready to breathe, sweat, and laugh together.

See you on your mat!
